Colombia Earthquake: What Travelers Should Know

Colombia experienced a magnitude 7.4 earthquake in the department of Chocó, located in the western portion of the country near the municipality of San José del Palmar.

This occurred during the morning of August 10th, this past Monday. Over 130 deaths have been reported as of publication, with many others injured and rescue efforts still ongoing.

If you are connected in any way to the country, we send our support.

If you have upcoming travels to the Coffee Axis or the Pacific region of the country within the next month, it is recommended that you monitor developments and reconsider nonessential travel to the most affected areas.

Pereira, Manizales, Cali, Buenaventura, and parts of Chocó have reported deaths, structural damage, collapsed buildings, or interruptions to local infrastructure.

Optional alternatives may include Medellín, Caribbean coastal cities, Bogotá, and Villa de Leyva. Although the earthquake was felt across much of Colombia, these destinations have not reported the same level of damage as the most heavily affected areas. Conditions can change, so confirm your transportation and accommodation directly before traveling.

Down below we’ve included some resources for flexibility and preparedness below in case of unforeseen circumstances.
